The renowned Italian defense powerhouse, Leonardo, has successfully acquired the highly regarded land vehicle manufacturer Iveco Defense in a substantial deal valued at €1.7 billion (approximately $1.94 billion), as announced this week. This strategic acquisition underscores Leonardo’s ambition to expand its footprint within the defense industry and enhance its operational capabilities.
Set to finalize by the first quarter of 2026, this acquisition not only strengthens Leonardo’s portfolio but also consolidates Italy’s defense sector at a pivotal moment when European defense spending is witnessing a significant increase. This strategic move positions Leonardo favorably in the competitive landscape of military technology and defense manufacturing.
Iveco is well-known for producing a diverse range of ground vehicles that are designed for various missions, including ground and amphibious operations. Among its notable offerings is the advanced Centauro II wheeled tank, a collaborative effort between Leonardo and Iveco that has been officially selected by the Italian army for its operational needs.
In addition to its traditional offerings, Iveco has made strides into the realm of autonomous ground vehicles. Earlier this month, the company was chosen by a NATO office to engage in concept development and experimentation related to ground drones, showcasing its commitment to innovation and adaptation in military technology.
According to the announcement, “The integration of Leonardo’s advanced electronic systems—including a comprehensive suite of combat electronics sensors and next-generation turrets—with Iveco Defence vehicles will guarantee the utmost effectiveness of the proposed operational solutions.” Furthermore, it was mentioned that “Leonardo, in collaboration with its partner Rheinmetall, will explore potential opportunities concerning the heavy vehicle system,” highlighting ongoing collaboration in the defense sector.
Roberto Cingolani, the CEO and General Manager of Leonardo, emphasized the significance of this acquisition, stating, “The acquisition of Iveco Defence represents a key milestone in the execution of our inorganic growth strategy and supports the full implementation of our Industrial Plan. This transaction reinforces Leonardo’s position as a reference player in the European land defence market, a sector anticipated to experience sustained growth in the coming years.”
Reflecting on the future of the industry, Lorenzo Mariani, co-general manager of Leonardo, previously asserted to Breaking Defense that “Consolidation is the only way” for European firms to thrive moving forward, reinforcing the strategic rationale behind this acquisition.
In a recent note to investors, analyst Byron Callan of Capital Alpha Partners projected that “The Italian defense budget is expected to increase by EUR 4 billion annually over the next five years to meet the 3.5% NATO commitment, suggesting growth from EUR 17-18 billion to EUR 30 billion in revenues as management anticipates by 2030. This projection implies an increase of 6.0-7.5 million extra hours of engineering and 1.7-2.3 million hours of manufacturing,” emphasizing the robust future outlook for Italy’s defense sector.
