Amazon Prime is making headlines by initiating $1.5 billion in refunds aimed at millions of Prime members. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) claims these customers were ensnared in challenging subscription cancellation processes.

In 2023, the FTC accused Amazon of enrolling tens of millions of customers in Prime using what its chairman described as “sophisticated subscription traps designed to manipulate consumers into enrolling in Prime.” The commission further noted that cancelling the subscription once enrolled proved to be a complicated process. While Amazon has denied any wrongdoing, it has agreed to pay a substantial fine of $1 billion alongside $1.5 billion in customer refunds, as well as to ease its cancellation policy.

This settlement represents the FTC’s largest resolution to date and stands as the second-largest consumer refund in history. (The record for the largest refund remains with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, which distributed $1.8 billion to consumers adversely affected by credit repair companies.)

You may be wondering who qualifies for these refunds, how much you can expect, and when the refunds will be processed. Here’s everything you need to know.

Who is Eligible to Receive Refunds from the Amazon Prime Settlement?

To be eligible for a refund, you must have enrolled in Amazon Prime within the U.S. during the period from June 23, 2019, to June 23, 2025. You may also qualify if you attempted to cancel your Prime subscription but faced difficulties during that same timeframe.

This means that both the enrollment in the program and any cancellation attempts that did not succeed must have occurred within the specified time window.

What is the Expected Refund Amount for Eligible Customers?

Most eligible customers can anticipate receiving refunds amounting to up to $51. The first wave of automatic payments will be processed within the initial 90 days following the FTC’s order. Priority will be given to those who utilized three or fewer Prime benefits within a year of signing up through specific Amazon pages, as outlined in the FTC’s ruling.

Customers who file a valid claim following the issuance of automatic payments may also receive up to $51. Additionally, individuals who were unintentionally enrolled or experienced challenges in cancelling their subscriptions will be refunded next, based on the total membership fees they paid, capped at $51.

If the overall funds from the settlement are insufficient to cover all affected Prime customers, Amazon will distribute refunds on a pro rata basis. Consequently, some customers may receive less than the maximum amount of $51, potentially even less than their original payments.

How Can I Claim My Refund from the Amazon Prime Settlement?

As of now, you do not need to take any action, as stated by the FTC.

Amazon is required to automatically refund eligible Prime customers by December 25. After this initial round of automatic payments is finalized, the settlement stipulates that anyone still eligible to submit a claim will receive notifications via email and traditional mail.

What is the Deadline for Filing a Claim for the Refund?

If you do not receive an automatic refund, you will be informed within 30 days following Amazon’s completion of its automatic payments.

Once you receive the claims form, you will have up to 180 days to submit it to Amazon. You can send it via email, traditional mail, or through the settlement website, which is currently not operational.
