The Charm of the 4th TikTok Delay!

The Charm of the 4th TikTok Delay!

In January, the vulnerabilities associated with TikTok were officially categorized as a significant national security concern. This widely adopted social media app, which is owned by a foreign entity, has raised alarms to such an extent that the government preferred to consider shutting it down rather than allowing users to continue posting their dancing videos and expressing outrage at global issues. The Trump administration has decided to postpone a definitive action while they explore alternatives to address the challenge of a public forum not controlled by an American tycoon. We are currently on our fourth extension of this situation. According to a report from CNN:

On Tuesday, Trump enacted an executive order that extends the enforcement of a TikTok ban in the United States for an additional three months. This action may be overridden later if a deal to transfer the social media app’s U.S. assets to an American-backed purchaser is completed.

This executive order was crucial to prevent TikTok from becoming inactive in the United States on Wednesday, the day the prior extension was scheduled to end.

The precise terms of the agreement are likely to remain unclear until everything is finalized, and we receive an official announcement through a Whitehouse.gov release. However, negotiations seem to indicate that approximately 20% of TikTok may still be under Chinese ownership. It is unclear how this arrangement mitigates the risks posed by a foreign government having access to sensitive user data. Perhaps the perceived threat is diminished by the new surveillance and policing measures that have intensified since the app’s initial suspension. Similar to the content moderation practices on Facebook, TikTok has actively regulated and removed videos that address current contentious issues such as abortion, even when these videos do not breach any terms of service.

In the meantime, users should take advantage of the remaining time of this current TikTok extension before it potentially transforms into a platform reminiscent of Truth Social.
