Uber’s Tony West Takes Unpaid Leave to Support Kamala Harris’s Campaign
Uber’s Chief Legal Officer, Tony West, is stepping away from his role at the company to support the political campaign of his sister-in-law, Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris. West, who has been married to Kamala Harris’s sister for 26 years, announced his decision to take unpaid leave starting August 17 to focus on assisting his family and supporting Harris’s campaign.
In an internal email, West expressed his dedication to prioritizing family commitments, stating, “While I love my job, my team, and the positive impact Uber has on the world, I have always believed family comes first.” His role in the campaign will involve serving as a family-member surrogate, providing a unique perspective on Harris as someone who has known her for decades.
Having previously worked on Harris’s 2020 presidential campaign, West has now taken on a significant role in her 2024 bid, playing a key part in communicating with the campaign’s leadership. During the initial weeks following Harris’s emergence as the likely nominee, West has been actively involved by her side.
During his absence, the responsibilities at Uber will be handled by chief deputy general counsel Katie Waitzman and deputy corporate secretary Elizabeth Coleman. West’s decision to prioritize supporting his family and contributing to political campaigns underscores the importance of personal values and family connections in his professional journey.
