However, claiming at this age results in a permanent decrease in benefits of up to 30%.<\/li>\n<li>\u201cFull retirement age\u201d will change to \u201cstandard benefit age.\u201d This age is set at 66 or 67, depending on the individual\u2019s birth year.<\/li>\n<li>\u201cDelayed retirement age\u201d will be updated to \u201cmaximum benefit age.\u201d Individuals can begin receiving retirement benefits at age 70, which offers an 8% annual increase in benefits, potentially reaching a total of 24% above the standard benefit.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cHard-working Americans deserve clear and straightforward information when planning for their retirement, especially regarding how to claim <b><a href=\"https:\/\/oxfordwisefinance.com\/blog\/americans-views-on-social-security-at-90-years-old\/\">Social Security<\/a><\/b> benefits,\u201d stated Michele Stockwell, president of <b>Bipartisan Policy Committee Action<\/b>, when the bill was introduced on September 10.<\/p>\n<p>AARP, the nonprofit organization advocating for older Americans, has consistently supported initiatives aimed at simplifying <b>Social Security terminology<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese changes will empower individuals to better comprehend the lasting effects of their claiming decisions,\u201d wrote Bill Sweeney, AARP\u2019s senior vice president of government affairs, in a recent correspondence to Congress.<\/p>\n<h2>Why Do Americans Face Challenges in Understanding Social Security Benefits?<\/h2>\n<p>Many older Americans increasingly depend on <b>Social Security retirement benefits<\/b> to maintain their financial stability. A survey conducted by the <b>Nationwide Retirement Institute<\/b> in August revealed that 56% of Social Security recipients indicated they would struggle to survive financially if they missed even half of their monthly payment.<\/p>\n<p>The same survey highlighted a significant knowledge gap, as approximately 80% of Americans could not accurately identify the age at which they would receive their standard retirement benefits.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA significant number of near-retirees lack clear information regarding how their claiming age influences their benefits,\u201d noted AARP&#8217;s Sweeney in his letter.<\/p>\n<p>Research conducted by AARP indicates that while many Americans generally understand that delaying their claims can lead to increased benefits, a staggering 76% could not pinpoint the correct age to maximize their payments, which is 70.<\/p>\n<p>Given the high stakes involved, claiming benefits at the incorrect age could result in severe long-term financial repercussions for retirees.<\/p>\n<p>For example, the current average monthly retirement benefit stands at $1,955, according to the <b>Social Security Administration<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>Claiming benefits too early may incur a penalty of up to $586.50, which would lower the monthly payment to approximately $1,368.50.
